Installation
The DCCDIP CDI for the XR650R utilizes DC power for CDI operation. This requires 12VDC to be supplied to the CDI at all times during operation.
Installation of a battery and a rectifier and regulator (for your charging circuit) are required prior to using the new CDI.
The CDI is plug and play with the OEM wiring harness except for the power connection. You must run a 12V DC connection from a switched power source back to the CDI. Switched power is critical to ensure that you have a way to cut power to the CDI after you shut off your engine. Otherwise, your CDI will draw a small amount of power at all times after the bike is off and deplete the battery.
Start by connecting the 12V positive terminal of your battery to a switch. The switch is then connected to the supplied red power wire and connector. The pre-terminated red wire with connector then plugs into the CDI as shown below.
Now, using the supplied adhesive backed mounting pad, secure the CDI into the location you desire on the bike.
Next, connect the black CDI connector to the OEM CDI wiring harness on the bike. The four pin white connector is used for accessories such as a map selection switch, tachometer, shift light, launch control switch (rev limiter at start), etc.
With the ignition power switch on, the bike should be ready to start, and requires to modifications to the map to get going.
Map Customization
The latest free Ignitech tuning software can be downloaded here. Simply double click the .exe file to open up the program.
You must connect the CDI to a computer using a serial to USB cable.
The CDI MUST be powered on for the computer to communicate with it. Once powered on and connected, the program with show that the CDI is connected, and display the voltage supplied to it.
If you are unable to connect to the CDI, ensure that the COM port is selected to auto, and that you have the latest drivers installed for the USB to Serial cable.
Clicking the "Read" button will pull the current maps flashed to the CDI and display them on the screen.
Clicking "Verify" will tell you whether the maps programmed to the CDI are identical to the maps displayed on the screen.
Clicking "Program" will flash the CDI with the maps and settings shown on the current software screen and overwrite the existing CDI map files. Is is recommended that if you are going to customize your maps, that you first save a copy of the default maps that the CDI is programmed with upon arrival.
If you would like to add additional rpm columns to make a much finer ignition map, you can simply click the plus sign to the far right to add as many columns as you would like.
Only one map can be active at a time, and only A map can be active without using the accessory connector. Using the accessory connector allows the functionality listed in the above sections, and is required in order to utilize map B, and can be done so on the fly without shutting off the engine.
